Former Liverpool and Scotland defender Alan Hansen is seriously ill in hospital, the Merseyside club has said.

Hansen, 68, played 620 matches for Liverpool between 1977 and 1991, winning eight league titles, three European Cups and two FA Cups.

He also won 26 caps for Scotland and was part of the team that reached the 1982 World Cup semi-finals.

Since retiring from playing, Hansen has worked as a pundit for Match of the Day and is widely regarded as one of the best football analysts in the country.

The club said in a statement: "The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool Football Club are with Alan and his family at this time. The club will continue to provide updates on his condition as appropriate."
